Mission: The Hunt Begins
Location: JAG Office - Deck 6 - USS Artemis
Timeline: MD004 1000 hrs

Post lunch was a lull time for Kelly-it wouldn't be if she weren't in the office at 0 dark thirty every day, but again, she didn't get to be a lieutenant commander by showing up to work late. Anyway. She figured it was time for more of the "life change" stuff, and while it was proving to be difficult, she was doing it. She wouldn't be totally nice and friendly over night, but she could be less...terrible, she supposed. She made herself a cup of coffee-hot, dark, strong-and tapped her comms.

"Hey, Corwin. Can I see you for a minute?" She asked. Then clicked off. It was a habit she would have to work to break-the shortness. She clicked it again to get his answer, then waited.

" Sure...I'll be there in a moment. " A few moments later her office door chimed and he waited for her permission to enter. When the door opened he stepped in. " What can I do for you? " He asked. His voice and facial expression completely neutral. He stood just inside the room and wondering what she wanted to talk about.

She sighed. "Sit down, please. I had a meeting with Kidd. We're not taking the Breen attack to a full trial." She paused for a moment, and sipped some coffee. "Captain said I "misunderstood" the scope of the investigation. I claim he is playing around, but what can I do?" She sighed. "Anyway, I thought you should hear it from ME and not someone else." She paused again. There was more but she REALLY didn't want to have that conversation. Eating her words wasn't really something she was good at, and apologies were even LESS comfortable.

Jonathan's expression became quizzical. " Did the Captain say why we weren't taking the Breen case on fully? I thought this would be a case where a foreign power committed an act of war or terrorism against the federation. It was almost an open and shut case and an easy win for the prosecution, Still I would have done everything I could to properly represent my client, that goes without saying of course. Is that all you wanted to inform me of Commander? "

Kelly shrugged. "He says that we don't actually have any jurisdiction AT ALL, but you should clarify it with him." She paused. "Sit down a minute." She went on. "I absolutely believe you would've been a fantastic job at representing the Breen and I was looking forward to a court battle with you. I have read some of your transcripts. You're very good." She sighed. "But yes, that's all."

Jonathan sat down and nodded towards Commander Miller." I agree, I was looking forward to representing this case. I have read over your files as well and if I may say so it would have been a worthy fight to verbally spar against you, you've had a brilliant career and are a strong presence in the courtroom. It's a shame really, I guess we'll have to wait until the next case to see how well we fare against each other. " He said with a smile. " I am looking forward to it. "

Kelly nodded. "I appreciate that. He DID say we may have something soon; in the meantime, you'll be answering directly to Captain Kidd and not myself; I'll be learning Helm duties in the interim before our next case. I am still around to ask questions of if you have any, but I guess...enjoy the quiet time." She smiled a little. "THIS is why I dislike Fleet duty; I much prefer to be on a Starbase or Planetside-there's MUCH more action. If you find yourself in need of busy work, I have heard that the Academy is looking for some people to tape lectures about the law for sims. I could send you the info." She offered. She'd done it herself in the past.

" I can't tell you if I like fleet duty or not since this is my first ship assignment. I went from the academy straight to Star Base 1 in orbit above earth. From there I went to star base 57 and after several years I was transferred to Star Base Yorktown. It is truly an amazing place with one of the best court complexes that I've ever seen. As for the lecture videos for Starfleet Academy students, Yes please send me the details if you would. " He stopped and thought a moment. Do they normally require JAG officers to cross train on a ship to cover areas in case of emergency? I have basic first aid training that they teach in the academy. But to be honest I tend to fix machines better than people. "

She shook her head. "No. The Captain and Dr. O'Rourke think it will help my interpersonal relationships. Apparently, I have terrible people skills." They WOULDN'T be terrible if people didn't act the fool, but she didn't say that. "But I would recommend that you at least brush up on the basics. You never know when something untoward will happen. One of my first cases, actually, we had a ship's Captain and XO arrested in rapid succession, and their JAG was actually their third in charge. They were all eventually reassigned but he had to fill in for a few weeks. So, while rare, it is not impossible." She shrugged. That had been an absolute RIDE of a case. "I'll send that information to you by the end of the day; my niece is there now and that's how I learned of it; she teaches psychology there." Kelly reserved her opinions of psychology for the time being.

" Well Commander Miller, I thank you for the information and advice today, It would be good to help out aspiring young legal minds and get them started off in the right direction. Starfleet has given me so much, so it's only natural that I should give something back to help those that follow in our footsteps. " He paused for a moment. " That and you've given me something else to think about as well. I will brush up on the basics and get some practice time in on the holodeck as well. I've realized that we're our only rescue crew until help arrives. And since we're hundreds of lightyears away from just about anyone, it might take awhile for them to get here. So I thank you for your council and your time today. "

Kelly smiled lightly and nodded. "There you go, you understand. Anything further, you can send to me via PADD or just stop by; I'll be completing my final tasks before I report in tomorrow morning. If you get up and the ship is in the water...you know why." She shrugged. It was still a goddamn stupid idea but she didn't have a better one.

" Sounds good. If I need something I'll drop by unless I'm rather busy. I prefer talking to a person if they're close by instead of reading something off of a PaDD. PaDD's don't answer questions very well and I prefer the human connection over a cold data PaDD. " He got up and headed to the door, at the door he stopped and gave a friendly smile. " Just incase the ship does wind up in the water I'll wear my swim trunks tonight. Besides it's been awhile since I've had a good swim. I don't think you have much to worry about. If they didn't trust you they wouldn't let you anywhere near the helm. Besides, I trust you to pilot the ship. I hope that you have a great day Commander Miller. " With that said he turned and headed towards his office.
