Mission: The Sins of History
Location: Executive Officer's Office - Deck 4 - USS Artemis
Timeline: MD001 0930 hrs

Is this the right way of doing this or not? thought Lieutenant Ansel Lund as he started to walk towards the door that had been marked designating it the First Officer's office. Aboard normal Starfleet starships, reporting in to the Executive Officer was generally expected and then of course to the head of one's department or their assistant. Ansel was still wrapping his head around everything. Some of it was very familiar yet others were vastly different. He took a deep breath and decided that he was already there. He had tracked down the man and now was not the time to second guess himself.

He gave the uniform a tug and tried to smooth it out to appear his best before inching forward and pressing the chime. Hopefully I'm not disturbing him from something case related thought Ansel. Commander Abernathy Rice he committed the man's name to memory. He had no idea what this man would be like. All that Ansel could hope for was that this meeting would go smoothly and that he could continue settling in well enough aboard the Artemis.

Abe didn't look up from the latest journal he was reading as the door chime alerted him to the arrival, "enter," he called out. Abe leaned forward in his chair as he rested the padd in his hands on the desk, "Come in, come in," he glanced to the Officer as he marked his place in reading.

"What can I do for you," he took a second look, "Lieutenant?"

Ansel looked around the room to take in any distinct decorative flare or style. "I'm not really certain to be honest with you, Commander. I am new to all of..." Ansel gestured broadly. "I was just a run-of-the-mill ordinary science officer in Starfleet before the Artemis, Sir. Still kind of new aboard and I wasn't really sure aside from the head of my department as to who to check I'm with or not."

Abe smiled, "Relax, Lieutenant," he reassured the man, "everyone starts somewhere, and we all have been in your shoes." For Abe those first few assignments seemed like a lifetime ago, "how things have changed," he muttered to himself." He gestured to an open chair, "Please have a seat. Can I get you something to drink?"

The younge entomologist studied the snowy haired man with a gaze of respect and admiration. "I'd be up for a nice hot mug of tea. Surprise me, I'll drink anything. I need to expand my tea menu anyways" Ansel stated. He did love to try new things especially beverages.

"I know that you are correct, Sir. We all have been the new person and put into places that are unfamiliar to us" commented lieutenant Lund. "I'm still learning the ropes of this whole investigative side of things. Normally my expertise only came in hand trying to solve some sort of ecological mess because of an invasive insect species into an ecosystem. Now? I'm looking at bugs and larvae to determine when someone died or where they were."

Ansel listened carefully to Abe, a man who seemed to have lived several lifetimes with the depth of knowledge and wisdom he was able to bestow upon Ansel in an everlasting web of tales and stories of the yesteryear, and in each Abe had found a way to pacify Ansel's anxiety and worries about what was ahead for him aboard the USS Artemis. This was going to an adventure for Ansel, something brand new and with that came immense challenges and obstacles. Abe was a masterful orator though.

It felt like Ansel was in the man's office for several months but none of it bored him. If anything, Ansel felt a bit disappointed when the Commander had taken a comm call reminding him that he was due to be elsewhere in several minutes. Ansel was most grateful of Abe for taking time out of his day to teach Ansel a lot in so little time. He had learned that the man was allergic to Retinax V, a factor in why the First Officer wore glasses.

By the time that Ansel and Abe stood from their respective seats, Ansel was confident that he could be a part of this crew, part of this team, and contribute his own expertise to the cases that lay ahead for them. "Thank you, Commander. Thank you for everything. It has been marvelous" said Ansel as he reached out, extending his hand in order to shake Abe's.

The First Officer had kindly walked out with Ansel and the two shared a brief turbolift ride down. They exchanged a small discussion about apple pie before Ansel bid goodbye to let the man head off down a corridor to whatever was on his docket for the day.
